Week 63~Soccer Pro

Hey everyone! It seems like lately the weeks are passing by so fast. Haha everyone say after the mission it seems like it´s a dream. And I guess I´m living the dream. Hah. I have no idea if that actually made sense.

This week we contacted a lot of references and we had some good results. We still weren´t able to bring anyone to church this week, but we were able to find some youth playing soccer on the road this week and we were able to teach them. One of them has already gone to church and they taught me a few soccer tricks. I think I´m going to go pro for the olympics. Lol. #I´mBrasilianNow

This week we also had interviews with President Thomas. Wow he is just the greatest. Such a loving and humble man and his wife too is just amazing. This week we will have a Multi-zone conference and I can´t wait to hear their words of wisdom.

I´m trying to think of a funny story that happened this week, but I´m not remembering anything. But next week for sure will be a much more exciting email. Something I learned this week in Relief Society is that perserverance is the courage to start over. I liked that because usually they just talk about marriage and stuff.

 Thank you for your prayers!

Love,
Sister Lockhart

Week 62~Week of the Olympics

Hey people. Another week flew by so fast I can hardly remember what happened! Hah.

This week we spent the majority of the time finding new people to teach. We contacted a lot of part-member families and we were able to find some success this week. Haha, we also found of family of 13 kids! But as you can see it´s kind of hard to find all of them in the house all at once. But we´re teaching some of them. We didn´t bring anyone to church this week because everyone decided to sleep. Well, other than Renato. But that´s about it.

As for the olympics, (I know everyone wants to know about them) it hasn´t really affected us at all except when we arrive to eat lunch in the members´ houses and eveyone´s got the TV on which is awkward. How is the US doing?  But on the good note, here in Brazil you can collect the new coins they´ve made with olympic printings. I´ve collected 4 so far lol

That´s about it for this week. We´re starting to get to know the area a bit better so that´s good. Let´s see what the next week has in store! Love you all!

Week 61~On Wednesdays We Eat Feijoada

Hey fam, hey friends.
How´s your week been? Ours was good. This week was Lorenzzo´s baptism and I forgot my camera at the house so forgive me for now pictures this week! But the baptism was great! And now we´re helping Renato progress, so that was a good thing this week.

That family that we found last week didn´t come to church this week again, but they said next week they don´t have an excuse and Jane said that 2 days before we showed up at her door, she prayed to God to have him send someone to show her which church she should go to. We have a knack for showing up at the right place at the right time. Hopefully everything works out so that they can go to church next Sunday.

This week we also found João who was an old investigator of the Elders. He is really into conspiracy theories and is convinced that the catholic church is of the devil, but I got to use all the knowledge that I´ve accumulated about the scriptures to help him understand the Restoration and the Book of Mormon. That was fun. He really liked the Book of Mormon and is going to study it. We marked him for baptism, but it´s been hard to find in him in his house because he works at night and sleeps during the day and lives really far away. But, it´ll work out.

That´s about it for this week! Love you all and thank you for the support! Until next week,

Sister Lockhart

Week 60~´´Esta é minha filha amada, ouve-a!´´

Hello! This week I received my new companion! Her name is Sister Neto from Acre. She´s the first person I´ve met from Acre (she gets that a lot). It was pretty funny when we found out we were companions because I asked her if she liked the MTC and she said ´´Uh, yeah.´´ and I said ´´Good, because you´re going to back there.´´ Haha, it must be strange to go from the MTC to the area of the MTC.

This week we had a lot of miracles. We found a family! We taught them this week and marked them for baptism, but unfortunately when we went to pick them up to go to church yesterday, they told us they weren´t ready to be baptized and that if they leave the church they are going to they won´t be able to receive money from them anymore. Buuuuut, we are still going to help them. Also this week out of the blue I had the thought (but of course it was the spirit) to go to Renato´s house. So we went there and out of the blue Renato told us that he is going to get married! He said that it was because of our love as missionaries that he was finally able to understand that this is what he needs to do. But it´s a secret! They´re going to announce it at Lorenzzo´s baptism this upcoming sunday! I was very happy.

As for the area, it´s very large and we still don´t have a good map. I think they are going to put another set of sisters in the ward the next transfer, but we´ll see. That´s about all I have to say of this week! Love you guys!

Week 59 ~I am going to be a Mother (Again)...

Me, Elder Fernandez, Elder Barney, Sister Lozano, Sister de Oliveira
(I don´t know how I am still this white)

Hello all!
Another day, another dollar! Hah. So
tomorrow is transfer day and looks like I´ll be training again! President Thomas changed A LOT of stuff including our area. The Elder´s area of Casa Verde closed and now I have to take care of it. Which means our area that was once the size of an egg is now very large. But that´s cool, I´ll have some exploring to do. I´m a bit nervous to train here because my companion will be coming straight from the MTC to the area of the MTC. Kind of weird haha. And President Thomas is trying to show all the newbies that trainer is the most important calling on the mission. But it´ll all work out. Pray for me!

This week we had 2 investigators at church. Victoria came! And she loved it! She is going to start Personal Progress and go to the youth activities. Aleluia! She is so cute and we´re hoping to put her on date this week. Also Renato came to church, what a miracle. He didn´t stay the whole time, but he went to hear his daughter get her patriarchal blessing, so I´m sure that was special for the family. We´re hoping in 2 weeks to baptize Lorenzzo! This kid...haha. Lorenzzo is Renato´s kid. It´ll all work out!

This week I had to renew my visa which was fun. (Not.) But we got to see some missionaries from Mission Curitiba that flew all the way out to São Paulo to renew their visas too. It was pretty interesting. They flew out by themselves, 4 americans, to do everything themselves. I find that pretty funny because we can´t even go to the temple without having to be accompanied. Lol
There´s not much else to say. I killed my companion today (killing= sending home haha) which is kind of sad because it reminds me that I only have four months left....Hey family, how do you feel about living in Brasil?! I don´t want to come home just yet! haha.

Oh yeah, shoutout to RENAN who found my blog, but does´t even speak english. Google translate works wonders, né?

I love you all! Thank you for your prayers and support! As always, until next week!

Week 58~The Work of Angels

This is me trying to be taller than Emily

Good morning America!
This week was cool. We got to meet our new mission president and his wife and his daughter this week and wow! They are amazing. President Thomas is the most humblest man I have ever met (other than my dad, awww). And Sister Thomas is so cute and Emily their daughter speaks very good portuguese for being here for a couple of weeks. We had an activity to meet them and they talked a lot about our personal conversion as a missionary. He is also going to let us continue drinking coke. hahaha.

This week was kind of a blur. We found a woman named Paloma this week who seems pretty interested in the church and wants to learn more. When we taught her the Restoration, she said she had never heard anyone claim these things before, but that she would like to know if it´s true. We also found a girl named Victoria who is the daughter of a less active and has some mental issues, but we´re helping her understand how the Atonement of Jesus Christ can help. She is reading the Book of Mormon and her mom said that they will go to church this sunday! When we arrived at her house yesterday, she was crying, and said when we arrived at the door, she was praying to God to send help. I´m really thankful that the Holy Ghost was the Senior companion that day.

Geraldo is getting better with his drinking problem. He didn´t drink 3 days during the week! Iago, his son, is helping us help him now. He said that I´m not allowed to leave this area until Geraldo is baptized.. Hahah so I might be staying here until the end of my mission. We´ll see!

Let´s see, what else. I stepped in hole and fell again this week, so my knees are pretty banged up. Oh and we did a division with the Sister Training Leaders which was fun. And that´s about all I remember for this week. In one week I´ll be getting a new companion. There´s a brasilian sister in the MTC now who is waiting for her visa to go to the......Raleigh North Carolina Mission! Hahaha! And it´s possible that she will be reassigned to serve in this mission, so that´s really cool.

That´s it for this week! Love you all!

Week 57~Pants & Unexpected Baptism

Isabella and her family

Hey, ho, let´s go!

This week was pretty awesome. Last P-day we went to Liberdade which is a Japanese bairro (it´s like a neighborhood or city, like Gray´s Creek). It´s the largest Japanese district in the world outside of Japan! It was awesome and ridicuously expensive, so I only bought sushi. Fun fact: the best sushi in the world is made here in Brasil, outside of Japan of course. It was also the day I decided to test out my new pants..hhahahah. I have to say it was pretty great. Actually it didn´t make a difference to me and probably won´t use them much, but I had to say I at least used them once!

Also this week when we went to visit Isabella to say we wouldn´t be visiting much anymore she told us she was going to be baptized Saturday. We actually didn´t believe her, but she showed us that she threw away all of her funk music (it´s a genre of music that isn´t very appropriate) and she is going to start dressing modestly now. She told us that the church will help her be a better person and help her make good decisions. We were pretty impressed. So she was baptized Saturday!

We also started our English class this week. It´s not as big and great as the class we started in Perdizes, but it´s still fun. There are only two americans in our district, me and Elder Barney (yes, his actual last name is Barney) so it only gives to have one class. Actually funny story: me and my companion got to the church and the elders were running late saturday. The church was unlocked to let the people in, but the only person who entered was a homeless man. We asked him if he was here to join the english class, and he reluctantly said yes. We told him we were going to start in 15 mintes. So he went and started stealing the trash from the church. My companion was like ´´What do we do?´´ and I said to just wait until the elders get here. The elders arrived and we invited him to the class (his name is João, or John). And he joined. Afterwards, we had cookies and he told us how grateful he was for our hospitality. I expect he will return Saturday.

Church was interesting this week. A guy we talked to on the street said he would visit the church this sunday and he did surprisingly (everyone says they´re going to visit, but never do). He has already read the Book of Mórmon all the way throughl, but he never visited the church, because he is very Evangelico. But he came! It was interesting. He bore his testimony during sacrament meeting and participated in Gospel Principles and Priesthood. He even stayed for the baptism afterwards. We´re going to teach him this week, so let´s see how that goes.

That´s about it for this week! Until the next!

Week 56~Saint John's Party

Tchau Presidente!

Good morning!

I hope everyone is well! This week had it´s ups and downs, but overall pretty good.

Isabella decided that she would rather live a life chasing after boys than chasing after Jesus. But that´s okay. We were doing contacts and we met her uncle who told us he was really interested in learning about the church! There is always a miracle hidden in the rough.

A miracle that happened this week: Renato came to church! After one of the hymns I looked behind us and there was Renato sitting with his family! And he participated during Gospel Principles which was good. Renato used to frequent the church when his ´´wife´´ was baptized, but then stopped because they have been having relationship issues. But he asked her yesterday morning if he could go. So that was a big surprise. We are going to mark a wedding date for them this week!

Also, Saturday was Festa Junina (or Festa de São João) which is a holiday here in Brasil. I don´t know what they actually celebrate, but there was an activity at the church which was really cool. 8 of our investigators came and they loved it! Now the only problem is getting them to church on Sunday..

Let´s see, what else? We´re probably going to start another english class here, which is good because I think it would work out really well and I miss the old english class we taught in Perdizes. Oh yeah, our new President arrives this Wednesday! I´m sure I´ll have more to tell about that next week.

Thank you all for your prayers! Love you!

Week 55~We are Happy and Full of Faith

Me, Lorenzo, Sister de Oliveira, e Meiren
(Lorenzo is Renato´s son who just turned 8;
we´re helping prepare him for baptism)

Hello my friends and family, happy father´s day! Actually, I don´t think brasilians celebrate father´s day because nobody has said anything about it. Anyway, this week was pretty good!

Isabella, our investigator, is progressing, slowly, but progressing. She is 12 years old and has a lot of friends in the church and a lot of friends who are investigating the church in the Elder´s area. It´s kind of complicated to explain the situation, but there is a lot of drama in the Young Men and Young Woman´s program in this ward, I feel so sorry for the leaders. I just want to give a big shout out to my leaders that I had, thank you for your patience hahaha So yeah, we´ll see how it goes with Isabella.

This week we were able to see a lot of miracles. One of them was a reference (i think that´s the word) from the Elders. They made a contact with a woman on the street who´s daughter was baptized and lives in our ward, but is now inactive. The woman said we could visit her because she moved and now lives in our area. So we got to the building, which was actually an apartment, ugh, and they let us enter! Which never happens haha And this couple loves the missionaries! The strange thing is that they were never taught by the missionaries. So we talked to them and Rosa seems very prepared to receive the restored gospel. And afterwards they bought us a pizza...I think I´m gaining weight now! lol Sidenote: The pizza in São Paulo is the best pizza in all of Brasil! Not kidding.

I´ve started a project here called ´´Save the Families´´. This project is to help 3 families here in Casa Verde baptize the father of the family. This is kind of our biggest hope right now for baptisms for the upcoming transfer. These 3 future priesthood holders Renato, Geraldo, and Luiz, have received the missionaries for a good while, but we were able to mark Geraldo for baptism this week! And Luiz said he would pray and asked if he should be baptized which he said he´s never done before...And Renato needs to get married. The elders actually baptized his wife who actually isn´t married to him legally, I don´t know how they got away with that, but okay. Everything is gonna work out!

I have been able to see that even though this area has a reputation for being one of the harder areas of the mission, that it is an area of miracles and is helping me build a solid foundation of faith. It´s also cool to see the newbie american missionaries because I can speak portuguese with them and feel smart hahahaha

Thank you for your prayers and support! Until next week!

Week 54~Casa Verde

Hey ya´ll, don´t haved much to say this week other than it´s so cold here I don´t think I´ve ever experienced cold like this. Apparently it only gets this cold in the south of Brasil. My luck!

So Casa Verde is a strange area. It´s the area of the MTC of Brasil and the area is about the size of an egg, it´s so small. They just opened up this area recently for Sisters and redivided the area. It´s kind of cool because we get to see all the new missionaries on P-day, but also strange because everybody here already knows about the church, which makes it a bit hard to find new investigators. But the ward here is really cool because they all work at the MTC so they´re really willing to help. Actually this area reminds me a lot of Utah. It´s interesting.

That´s all for this week! I forgot my camera so no pictures...

Week 53~Forget Yourself & Go to Work

Yesterday I got the sad news that I´ll be leaving Maria Rosa and I´ll be going to Casa Verde to be companions with my first trainer Sister de Oliveira. Casa Verde is in Perdizes Zone so I´ll be returning to those days again. Also it´s sad because I was pretty sure I was going to stay in the area because I´ve never stayed in an area for more than 2 transfers. But you got to do what you got to do.

Rita was confirmed this week and we brought Catarina and her two kids to church. It was a miracle because we´ve been having a hard time finding new people who have interest in our messages. But we taught her the restoration and the spirit was strong and as catholic as she is, she really liked the church. Also yesterday we visited a less active and had a great lesson. She wants to come back and her daughter isn´t baptized! It was a miracle!

I am so grateful for the time I spent here in Maria Rosa. I am raelly going to miss it, but a member from the ward gave me some food for thought. She said you´re here on the mission, but there comes a time when you have to make the sacrifice. I liked that. Yeah, I mean, we leave everything behind to be here, but there comes a time when we have to make the sacrifice here on the mission.

Love you all! Tchau mesmo!

Week 52~Wonderful Feeling-Wonderful Day...

Hey everyone! Today we had our farewell for President Del Guerso which was the bomb. It was really emotional because he´s just like our dad. And we all got to give him a hug at the end. So sad. BUT, we skyped our new President and his wife and he´s so cute! Her too! She doesn´t speak portuguese and President Thomas is remembering, with a strong American accent, but he seems like a dad too. It´ll be exciting to get to know him and his wife.

This week was Rita´s baptism!! It almost didn´t happen because she didn´t want to pay tithing, but we told her to pray about it and a miracle happened. To make a long story short, Maria, our recent convert who was going to have to move out because she didn´t have money to pay rent, moved into a better house and we saw the hand of the Lord bless her and her family. We arrived the next day and Rita said she would pay tithing. What a blessing. What a miracle!

We also found Claudenise finally. The whole family was lying about where she was at, but we found her on the holiday and she said she hasn´t given up and she still wants to be baptized, but that she wants to wait until June because her mom got really sick and her husband still doesn´t want her to be baptized. So it´s all in her time.

We also had our last Multizone conference with President wednesday too. Afterward we went to the temple with him to do a session and we all went to the Celestial Room and wow was the spirit so strong. One of the happiest moments I´ve experienced. I have a strong testimony of the Plan of Salvation, which is a plan of happiness. I also like that scripture in Doctrine and Covenants that says ´´how great will be your joy if ye bring one soul unto me.´´ Because if you want to be happy, help other people!

Until next week my people!

Week 51~I LOVE PARAISOPOLIS...

Hey people, this week was pretty cool. Let me give you the rundown.

This week our whole zone got to go to Paraisópolis to help the people there who lost there home in a recent fire that destroyed about 10,000 people´s homes and killed about 5 people. So we spent two days doing service there to help the people. It reminded me of the good old days of doing service as a youth. We folded clothes, sorted shoes, worked in like a soup kitchen, etc. It was a great opportunity. Paraisópolis is the second largest favela in all of Brasil with about 100,000 people, which is ridiculous. I´ll put in a picture of what it looks like. But yeah, Paraisópolis is pretty famous that there´s a soap opera here in Brasil called ´´I Love Paraisópolis´´ hence the title. But don´t worry, we were completely safe

This week had it´s ups and downs too. We can´t get in contact with Claudenise because her family basically hates us. Her mom got sick so she´s been passing time there. One day we got to her house and her husband said she was at her mom´s house and that he was leaving to drop off his son. So after I was all like ´´We´ve got to go find her. Let´s go knock on doors.´´ I remembered more or less what road her mom lived on because one time she mentioned it briefly. So we said a prayer and went on faith and we knocked on doors. We were actually going in the wrong direction, but by a miracle we found the house in 10 minutes!! what?! But then we got there and the son answered and was mean to us and told us she wasn´t there. Whatever. Buuuuut it´s not over yet.

But yeah other than that it´s just been really cold and rainy and apparently we can use pants now? That´s a little confusing. But actually I don´t think our mission is included in that. As for as I know, Dengue and Zica isn´t as big of a problem here as it is in other parts of Brasil.

Those are the highlights of this week! I´ll just send pics now. Thanks all for everything!

Week 50~"Don't Worry, Be Happy"

Hey everyone, another week down, many more to go! Did you know every body here likes Bob Marley? This week was great! We had Stefani´s baptism which was awesome! Sister Cannon and I sang ´´Come Thou Fount´´ in english because Stefani speaks english. It actually worked out really well and we didn´t biff it. Haha! But yeah everything worked out and was a stress-free baptism which is kind of a first hahah.

In other news our investigator, Rita, who is Maria´s friend will hopefully be baptized 29th of May. She is trying to stop smoking and is actually doing really well because she doesn´t have anymore money to buy cigarettes. Cigarettes are really cheap hear. In dollars it would be about 1.50 or something like that. No wonder everybody smokes here.

Claudenise is also marked for the 29th of May. She isn´t receiving a lot of support from her family, but she has a lot of support from the ward and says she is determined to be baptized. She is amazing really. She wants to give us missionaries lunch and also bake bread for the sacrament! She´s so sweet.

That´s about it for this week. The next few weeks will be cool because we have the Multi-zone conference and P-day with the President before he leaves. It´s weird to think he leaves the next transfer. Love you all! Until next week!

Sister Lockhart

Week 49~Miracles Happen

The Warriors of Maria Rosa

Happy Mother´s Day to all those great moms out there! I had the great opportunity to talk to my family on Sunday without any problems this time, thank goodness. And it was awesome. And now we´re back to work.

Stefani is all prepared for her baptism this Sunday; it´s going to be great. I can´t express the joy I´ve felt in this area. I remember someone told me before the mission that we are sent to our missions to find at least one person in particular and I believe that´s true. Hurrah for Israel!

Unfortunatey, Claudenise won´t be baptized this week because her husband is totally against it. She says she is determined to baptized, but we are here to bring families together and not break them up so it´s sad. :/ But miracles happen.

We are also working with a friend of our recent convert Maria. Her name is Rita and she had a dream after she read the Book of Mormon of her eating bread and there being lots of water. We marked her for baptism n the 29th of May, but she has a problem with smoking and coffee. But she went to church and loved it and Maria told us she is smoking a lot less now. Miracles happen.

I don´t have much else to say. Everything is pretty much normal now. It feels like this is the first time everything is normal, which will probably change now that I´ve said that. Oh if you want to hear the funny story of a contact I did this week, just ask.

Love you all!

~Week 49 Mother's Day Skype Call...

Mom's Note... Had a wonderful call from Jessica.  She was in good spirits and is anxiously engaged in the work of the Lord, so much so that she was having a real hard time speaking in English.

We also got to hear her sing "Israel, Israel  God is calling" with a very sweet family that lives next door.  Jess says it's her favorite hymn.

What a wonderful Mother's Day...

Week 48~Winter is Here...

Winter has arrived. Need I say more? Basically, it´s really, really cold. Whoever said it doesn´t get cold in Brasil (or São Paulo for that matter) was really wrong. I thought I´d never say it, but I actually prefer the heat. At least it hasn´t been raining. But that´s enough about the weather.

ALRIGHTY let´s get down to it. Paloma was confirmed this week and Stefani and Danilo came to church. Man, I just love this family. We had heart to heart with Stefani this week and she bore her testimony to us and it´s these moments that remind us why we do missionary work. The gospel changes lives! The church is true! You don´t have to yell it out your window, but you can invite someone to church! Anyway. Stefani will be baptized the 15th of May :D We´re still working with Danilo who did not want to come to church because there was a big soccer game that would be missing, but Stefani got him to come so that was great.

Also, Claudenise, Victor´s mom, wants to be baptized as well. I´ve never met anyone such an eleita(?) I don´t know this word in english and google translate says elected, but I think it´s more like chosen. Whatever, but she´s incredible. After we taught the Restoration she started to read the Book of Mormon and in one week she was ready to be baptized. She will hopefully be baptized the 15th of May too, but her husband isn´t too supportive. But she said she´s determined to be baptized. She´s the kind of person that Doctrine and Covenants talk about ´´that they are kept from the truth only because they know not where to find it´´. The Lord really does prepare his people.

What else? Maria and Isabele are doing great, coming to church every Sunday. Thankfully, she has an amazing visiting teacher who is taking great care of her. We had lunch with all of them this Sunday and I´ve really learned the importance of home teaching and visiting teaching. It´s really important, I´ll just say that.

That´s pretty much it. I´m in a great area with great members and great investigators and a great companion, who could ask for more? Thank you all for your prayers! Until next week!

Love,
Sister Lockhart

Week~47 "Israel Jesus Te Chama"

Hello my friends!  Another transfer down and my new companion is from Terezinha! Sister Melo. I've met her before and she's really sweet and has about 4 months on the mission. It's going to be great to work with her in ZION.

This week Maria and Isabele were confirmed during Sacrament meeting which was a great experience. I also gave a talk, which is the first time I've given a talk on the mission. But it actually worked out really well. Claudenise, the mother of one of our investigators, came to church this week and loved it! It's actually funny how that stuff works out because our investigator, her son, is really flaky now and just wants to party and drink, but maybe we were supposed to teach him to find her! God's plan is bigger than we can comprehend.

Also yesterday was the baptism of Paloma!!!! It was an awesome experience. Her whole family was there and now we're just waiting for the whole family to join in too. And my girl Paloma wants to serve a mission so I couldn't really ask for more.

Food for thought this week: when we're grateful, we make room to receive more blessings.

That's about it for this week! Thank you all for your continual support! Love you!

Love,
Sister Lockhart
