Week 13~Brasil!!!

Oi,
I do'nt even know where to begin with this email. So I will just start from the beginning. Also I am using a portuguese keyboard so please bear with me.

Last Monday we got on a plan headed for Brasil! And a cool experience happened while we were in the Atlanta airport. We met this other missionary who just came from the MTC and was going to the São Paulo Norte Mission. Anyway, he goes over and starts talking to these Brazilians in Portuguese. Turns out they were members of the church and so we just started talking to him. (The only advice he gave us was to never go back to Brazil and marry someone you baptized lol) Anyway, I saw this other Brazilian who was listening to our conversation so I went over there to talk to him. Apparently he was doing an exchange student program in Canada and was just coming home after being there a year. So we talked and he asked a few questions about what we do as missionaries. We asked him if he went to church and he said not really because there are many churches in Brasil and it is very confusing. He said he wants to feel that something is true. Well whatya know. So we gave him a Book of Mormon and I bore my testimony of when I felt it was true and he said he might want to have missionaries over. But get this. It turns out he lives in this very mission! So we are going to try and send the Elders over to that area. Pretty cool.

So yeah, Brasil is very different to say the least. When you greet someone you kiss them on the cheek, except as missionaries we can~t do that to someone of the opposite gender which can be pretty awkward sometimes when you think they are leaning in to tell you something and then your companion freaks out because they know what is up. Hahaha yeah that happened. It´s pretty fun though. My companion is Sister de Oliveira and she is very sweet. We just opened up a new area. That is hard. We haven´t taught very many lessons. And no one really wants to talk to us. Also no one can pronounce my name so I am officially going by Sister Loki because that is how they say my name. Haha.

The members here are so awesome. They are crazy, but fun. It is kind of hard because everybody thinks I am just stupid and so they try to speak english to me, but I have never met a more loud people. I can´t wait for they olympics hahah we work with the bishop a lot and the seminary kids who are just insane, but cool. I was able to convince one of them that I was from Brasil hehe but all in all, great people, hard life.

I will try to write more next week! I forgot to bring my camera so no pictures :( we aren´t supposed to carry it around because we would get jumped, no joke.

Thank you for everything! Love you all.
Love,
Sister Lockhart

Week 12~On Her Way...

Last Day in Bountiful Utah
Mom's Note...
Jessica called us yesterday from the Salt Lake airport.  She flew to Atlanta and then on to São Paulo getting there early this morning.  Her phone call was upbeat even though she said "I'm probably not going to understand anything they say to me" can't wait to hear from her.  She's a brave young woman.

Week 11~My Nickname is Casper...

Oi everyone!

This week I was told "You have the whitest skin I've ever seen!!!"
#storyofmylife

Anyway, Sister Fletcher went home on Wednesday so it's kind of weird just the two of us. It's nice though because now I actually get to talk during lessons. That'll probably change again here soon in Brazil.

Nothing too exciting happened this week. We were supposed to have a baptism this Saturday with Trinity, but she talked to her dad and he agreed that she can be baptized in September. So it looks like I won't be having having any baptisms here in Bountiful, but that's okay. I've helped a lot of people in other ways. We did have a little miracle though. We were returning late for a lesson and we weren't going to be able to make it home on time. So Sister Ursaga said a prayer out loud and after I said that no one is probably going to stop because it's dark and no one will see us. But what do you know not 5 minutes later a sister pulls up next to us and gives us a ride home. We made it home 2 minutes before we were supposed to be inside. The Lord takes care of his missionaries. I haven't learned much from my trainer about teaching, but she has taught me a lot about being grateful. When we're walking on really hot days she will say something like "Thank you Heavenly Father for this wind on a very hot day." Stuff I don't even think about. She's very good like that.

Since I probably won't be able to email next week (because I'll be on a plane to Brazil!!) I'll just tell you everything that will happen this week. On Wednesday we have a mission tour with a few members of the seventy which should be way cool. Then on Thursday, Elder Evans is coming and we are going with him and the stake presidency to visit less active people. I'll try to get a picture with him. Then on Friday we get to go to the temple! It's going to be awesome. Then on Sunday I'll go to the departing devotional and Monday I'll leave. I would go into more detail, but the people next to me are quoting SpongeBob episodes very loudly and I can't concentrate. But I'll have plenty to talk about next week.

Thank you for all your prayers and support. Love you all!

Week 10~I'm Famous...

Morgan, Me & Trinity
who will be baptized on August 22

Hey everyone!

This week was rather uneventful, but 3 people said I look like Taylor Swift, 1 person said I look like Analeigh Tipton, and another said I look like one of the chicks off of Orange is the New Black. I find it funny because none of them even look alike. But hey, I'll take it.

The baptism we were supposed to have on Saturday ended up falling through. He said he didn't feel ready and that he might be ready in September. Except, he's been saying that for the past twelve years, so we'll see. Our other baptism for August 22 is still on, but now her parents are making it harder for that to happen. This girl is an awesome 12 year old girl, who prayed about the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith and knows that it is true. She doesn't know a whole lot about the church, except that she knows what she felt and really wants to be baptized. She's awesome.

In other news, a new Brazilian family moved into one of our wards and they're super cool. They said they would feed us Brazilian food before I leave, which better be soon because I leave in exactly two weeks!! Whoop! Let's see, what else? We got one of our returning members on the stop smoking program! He's really into it and really wants to quit. He's awesome to teach because he's so humble. And so is his brother. His brother just sat in for one of our lessons a bout reading the scriptures and he said he wanted a Book of Mormon so he could start reading it! Unfortunately he's not in our area, so we handed him off to the stinky Elders (kidding duh, Elders are great too). But they're great people.

Alright prepare for kind of a nerd tangent. So we were in a lesson and the investigator we were with has a hard time with certain doctrines of the church, and the member said it was because of his perspective of the doctrine. He said each mathematical system in the world is based on the root of ten, which makes sense because everyone in the world has ten fingers. But if an alien race with only 8 fingers came to earth, they wouldn't understand our system of 10 because their system would be based on a root of 8. That doesn't mean either system is wrong, it just has to do with your perspective. And if you truly want to understand the system (or in this case, the doctrine), you have to go back to the root. Our investigator really liked that. And I really, really liked that. Okay nerd tangent over.

Ok since I didn't send pictures last week, here they are.

Have a great week!! Miss you all!

Sister Lockhart

Weèk 9~Bingo!

Dearest family and friends,

This week went by so fast! I can hardly remember what happened.

This week I was able to do exchanges. I was able to go to another area and spend the day with another Sister Missionary. It was fun. We were able to go to the Care Center which is basically an old folk's home and we got to teach the gospel principals class. I was able to meet this little old man named Albert who was baptized a few months ago at age 92. He told the class that he prayed to God to help him win Bingo and he won six times. The Branch President didn't know how to respond to that hahah

We have 2 investigators with a baptismal date this month! One of them just kind of fell out of the sky. A 12 year old girl announced in church she was going to be baptized of the 8th, but didn't tell anyone about it till then. We found out about this on Saturday morning. Also she's going to girl's camp this week which means we would've only been able to teach her all 5 lessons in 3 days. Thankfully she moved the date to the 22nd so her grandpa can baptize her.

The other baptismal date is with a man who has been investigating the church for 12 years. He's an intellectual who overthinks everything, but one of the nicest people I've met here. We were able to share a tender moment this past week. He was being stubborn as usual, so I asked him why he thought missionaries were different (he had mentioned it in a previous lesson) and he said they seem just so pure and good. I was able to explain that that pureness and light comes from Jesus Christ. And it's true. That "Mormon glow" comes from Jesus Christ. He said "I am the light of the world." (John 8:12, Mosiah 16:9). Anyway, at our next lesson he said life could really be like he Matrix and really this is all a dream and we might be hooked up to tubes and stuff. Oy vey.

We also had a very awesome zone conference this week. It was about consecrating ourselves. There is a really good talk on it called "Consecrate thy Performance" by Neal A. Maxwell if you want to read it. It applies to everyone, not just missionaries. But one thing that was said at the conference I really liked is that we should always be happy and never content. Meaning we should always be happy, but always improving and progressing.

Until next week,
Sister Lockhart

Week 8~"99 Problems and a Visa Ain't One"

(Sister Ursaga loves filters)

I apologize in advance for the lyrical pun...

I've actually never heard the song before. Anyway, lots of good news this week. I got my visa! Yay! But I will be staying here until the transfer is over. So on August 24 I will be on a plane headed for Brazil! Thank you all for your support and prayers.
Sister Ursaga, Sister Hall, me, Pedro
This week was a special week. Sister Hall and I had the opportunity to teach a Brazilian from another area (with permission from the zone leaders of course). He is an 18 year old from Rio and he was here visiting his uncle for about 3 weeks and he has been interested in the church. He has been reading the Book of Mormon in Portuguese and English to try to learn English. He told us it is a special book and he feels good when he reads it. Well whatyah know! Anyway, we were able to have a lesson with him before he left yesterday back to Brazil. There was a return missionary from Brazil with us so he did most of the talking. But we were able to bear our testimonies about the Book of Mormon. It was awesome and Pedro was awesome! We were able to get his contact info and hopefully be able to send missionaries in Rio to him, or very least keep in contact with him. Now I'm just that much more excited to serve in Brazil!

We also had Pioneer Day this week, which in Utah is of course a big deal. We were able to go to the parade and look out the window at night to watch the fireworks. Sometimes I just don't know about Utah hahaha but we were able to take one of our investigators and they asked if all of Bountiful is Mormon lol. They're from New York and they came here to raise a family. They're cute.

Utah is very different from Brazil (I realize that's kind of obvious). What I mean is, all our finding here is almost 100% contingent on the members. We are not allowed to track here because it just wouldn't make sense to, so referrals are basically the only way to get new investigators. Also, if you don't have a member present at a lesson then you can't count it as a lesson. Kind of weird. At least I know now how to be a member missionary in the future. And I have seen already that when the members help the missionaries in any way, the Lord really blesses them, so keep that in mind.

One thing I learned this week is that the word Gospel means "good news". And when we all share the gospel with others, we are sharing the good news that Christ lives and the church has been restored. I don't know what better news we could share! Sorry that was kind of cheesy.

Love you all! I appreciate your prayers! Have a great week!

Sister Lockhart

Week 7~South Bountiful...Kinda like "The South"

         Oi Everyone,

This first week has finally come to a close.
I'm serving in South Bountiful, which is actually the stake where one of my room mates from BYU is from. Kinda funny. I'm actually in a trio which I thought might be fun. It's...interesting. My trainer is 27 and from the Philippines. Very sweet. The senior companion leaves in 4 weeks and is kind of trunkie. We live in a member's home who is a prime cat lady, so we get along great obviously. Our Mission President and his wife are way cool too. They are the Spendloves and they are awesome people. President Spendlove keeps telling me "We don't want you here, but we want you here forever." Me too, President, me too.

It has been difficult adjusting. Utah is...interesting. I now understand what Mormon culture is. Thankfully, there are some amazing people here as well. 96% of the people we teach are less active or returning members. However, my second day we met someone who has lived in Utah for about a year and has never heard of Mormons. Weird, right? We are also teaching someone who has been investigating the church for 12 years. Not as weird for this area.

Oh yeah, this mission is an iPad mission which is (wait for it)....interesting. I really need to find a better word. Everything we do is now digital and nothing is on paper. It actually takes longer to do simple stuff I think, but I guess I can see how the iPads are useful. My biggest concern about them is that I've found missionaries rely on the videos for teaching more than the scriptures and lessons. It's just different from what I'm used to. And videos are a great way to bring the spirit into a lesson I've found. But then again so are the scriptures.

Apparently there is a rumor that the average weight gain for this mission is 45-60 pounds. Now, that may seem a little exaggerated, and it probably is, but I can see why the rumor got started. We don't walk anywhere. We are always driven. And at least once a week we eat two dinners in a row. Don't ask me why. At least it's good food. Actually this area quite reminds me of the south.

I hope everyone is well. I know I talked about this in my farewell talk before I left, but God doesn't call the qualified, but he qualifies those he has called. I mean, look at my dad. He's the stake president! Haha just kidding.

Sorry no pictures this week! I guess I don't have an excuse now that I have an iPad. All well.

Tchau meus amigos!
Sister Lockhart

P.S.  So I was able to check my visa status the day we left for here and it said it was done. Sister Halls done too. So apparently it takes about a week for them to send it back. I think I should be getting it this week if not next week.

Week 5~I'll Go Where You Want Me to Go Dear Lord... Even if It's the MTC for an Extra Week...LOL

I found a snail this week...

Oi People!

What a crazy week it has been, where do I even start?

I guess I'll  start off with our TRC (teaching resource center? or something) lesson this week. We got to make a skype call with someone from São Paulo and give him a 30 min. lesson. His name was Marlo and he was super cool. Anyway we were giving the lesson on prayer and I'm in the middle of my spiritual story when we hear this loud roaring in the background. Apparently his neighbor was out with his weed-whacker and none of us could hear each other on either end. So he gets up and shuts the window, which didn't help much, and here we are trying to teach a lesson with what sounds like Mike Myers (is he the one with the chainsaw? I don't know.) in the background. Finally he gave up and said "I will tell him to be quiet" (in english), but by the time he came back it was time for us to leave. Sister Hall and I had a pretty good laugh about it later.

This week we were also supposed to get our reassignments, but for some reason they haven't been giving them out on time. So we went to the travel office just to see if they would give them to us anyways (we weren't expecting anything). We get in there and ask about them and they look up all of our names and the lady looks super confused because we weren't on any list for reassignments or anything. So she asks her boss lady what's up and she doesn't know either so she tells the other lady to call up our agents and ask what's going on. She does that, looks super confused, writes down some stuff and then tells us for some reason they don't know why we aren't on the list. To make a long story short, she said we might be in the MTC for AN EXTRA WEEK!!!! I find this pretty hilarious. I think it just puts into application "I'll go where you want me to go dear Lord", even if it is still in the MTC.

Now for some good stuff that have happened. Of course we had 4th of July this week! Hooray America! We had a pretty sweet devotional by President Judd (he's a religious professor at BYU and a Branch President here) followed by some fireworks that we got to watch outside. We didn't get back till 11:00! Past my bedtime for sure. There was one thing President Judd talked about that I really liked. He gave this analogy of a cake and said "You don't have to eat the whole cake to know that it tastes good." I don't even remember what he was talking about for that specific analogy, but I think it is true. I don't know everything that God knows, but I don't have to know everything that He knows to know that the Church of Jesus Christ is true. I know it with all my heart.

We also had a very spiritual experience teaching this week. After we got done with one of our lessons, the Sister told us that every time a question came to mind, we answered it word for word as she needed it. This was very reassuring that we are not teaching lessons, we are teaching people and Christ is there with us every step of the way to help us. He wants his work to be furthered, we just have to trust that he will help us.

Something I've thought about this week: It can be easy to remember that the Lord has a plan for our lives, but we should also be mindful that God has a plan for us everyday. We can't be a tool in the hands of the Lord if we are sitting around wasting His time. A servant serves. I hope that makes sense.

Eu amo vocês!! E obrigada por todas coisas!

Week 4~Birds & Bats

This week was interesting to say the least.

But first, a lot of you wanted to hear the bird story. So just be prepared for a longer email than usual.

The four of us sisters had gone outside to do our personal study. We all said our individual prayers to begin our study and Sister Carleton got done saying her prayer first. She was just looking around and then heard a strange sound, like something hit a window. She looked over at the building and saw a small bird spiral down to the ground because it had ran into the window (Kinda like a Windex commercial). After we were done, she told us what happened. So I go over there to check it out because really who wouldn't? It appeared that one of the wings was broken and it leg was also hurt. We thought it was dead. So I started talking to it in Portuguese and Sister George named it Frank. All of a sudden, it woke up and jolted a little. Then,, after a good two minutes of looking at us,the bird flew right at Sister George and over my head and missed us by about an inch. I think I saw my life flash before my eyes.

Anyway, this week was the Mission President Seminar, which means all the new mission presidents who are going to their new missions in July were here for training. We got to have President and Sister Melo come teach us for two days and it was sweet. They're from Manaus Brazil and have thick accents, but they are the sweetest people. It makes me excited for Brazil, even if people aren't so nice.

President and Sister Melo

Because of the Mission President Seminar, General Authorities have been here and we're supposed to be getting a devotional by one of them tonight, whoop whoop. I don't know who yet, but I'll let you know. Anyway, last Tuesday a lot of the sisters, including us, switched buildings. It was a really nice, pretty new building. On Thursday, all the sisters were called into the gym for a special meeting. So everyone is freaking out because we had General Authorities on campus and everyone thought they were giving us a special devotional or something. Turns out that our new building we moved into had a bat problem and we had to move again. I guess I'm just that much more prepared for transfers. We also talked to the girls who had the bat problem in their room and apparently one of the girls woke up to a bat crawling on her in the middle of the night. Nasty! They were supposed to leave in a week, but have to stay an extra week to get rabies shots. Not fun at all.

Let's see, something I've learned this week: you can't grow in your comfort zone. And it really is true. I've learned so much here because I've been pushed. It's not always fun, but that's life. If you're doing it right. Haha

Oh also, this week we will be reassigned if we don't have our visas! We are supposed to find out this Thursday or Friday, but the Travel Office has been weird lately and they haven't been telling people until the Friday before we leave, so we'll see. Hooray!

Week 3~The Gift of Tongues is Real...

My humble abode

Oi Everyone!

Tomorrow hits the 3 week mark of my stay at the MTC, which means only 3 more weeks to go. I think in about a week or two we will find out if our visas have come or if we're being reassigned. It's like getting a new mission call all over again, which is exciting.

This week was a lot better than last week. Sister Hall and I didn't forget any Books of Mormon this time for our lesson, so that was an improvement. Teaching is getting better as well. The neat thing about only teaching in Portuguese is you're forced to really simplify the lessons, which is good, because no one wants to hear a 45 minute lesson. And you can focus more on the investigator's needs.

The Portuguese is coming along for those who want to know. I'm not worried about the language. With study and practice it will come. And I really have learned so much. I mean, carrying on conversations and having discussions all in Portuguese and actually being able to understand people when they talk in just three weeks of being here....yeah, the gift of tongues is real...

I wish I had more interesting stories, but routine doesn't really change week to week in the MTC. One time a bird almost killed us. And one time I made a 3 pointer in basketball during gym time. That's about as crazy as it gets.

We've been studying a lot about the Holy Ghost this week. You know what's cool? The Book of Mormon is the most correct book on this earth. And since the Holy Ghost testifies of truth, there's no way the Holy Ghost couldn't testify of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. Anyway, just a thought.

Thanks for all the emails... until next time,

~Sister Lockhart

Week 2~The Days are Going by Faster Now...

by Sister George

Dear friends and families,

First of all thanks for the emails
. It's nice hearing from people. Sometimes you forget there is an outside world to this place.

Each day at the MTC is kind of the same so it almost feels as if it's a blur. Luckily the days are going faster now. I've only been here two weeks, but it feels like 2 months.

3 Elders in our district left today. Two were already scheduled to leave because they had their visas, but then yesterday the third got a note from the travel office and basically was told he would be leaving also in under 24 hours. So now it's just 4 of us Sisters and our District Leader. We all feel pretty sorry for him.

3 elders from our district left this week

My companion and I met someone from São Paulo this week who lived right next to our mission I think. We told him where we were going and he gave us a few pieces of advice.
1) Do not leave your house after 7:30 pm
2) Avoid men with big coats
3) Avoid young men

Sweet.

We also talked to our Branch President and he says our mission isn't very much city like we thought it was going to be, but there is some if you go really far in. So that's pretty cool. We also had new Brazil Mission Presidents in our ward on Sunday and talked to a couple who said they knew our Mission President really well. Then they took a picture with us on their Ipad and sent it to him. It really is a small world sometimes.

As for teaching and Portuguese, teaching is hard and Portuguese is coming I guess. This week, one investigator asked for a Book of Mormon and we forgot to bring one. That was a rough day. It is also really hard when you're companion struggles a lot with the language so when you're teaching a lesson, it's like teaching by yourself. But I'm definitely glad that the Lord loves me enough to push me so that I can become better. Even when I don't really like it. How else would I be able to
become better?

Thanks for all of your support!

Love,
Sister Lockhart

Week 1~They Say The First Week's the Toughest...

Oi Family & Friends,

I've pretty much finished my first week at the MTC.
The first week they say is the toughest week and I can see why. The first day at the MTC they send you right to your classroom to start learning your language. Our teacher won't speak any English with us so we have to pay close attention to understand what he's saying. I love it though; it's actually pretty fun. I've already dreamed in Portuguese which is weird, but cool. Our teacher is Irmao Workman. He has kind of a reputation for being the greatest teacher here and I can see why. He's awesome. We call him "the spiritual giant, but not really" because he's like 5'4.

Our district is great too. My companion is Sister Hall and we actually met at BYU, which is pretty neat. I'm also rooming with Sister Carleton and Sister George. They are really great people, the only thing is I guess they weren't expecting how hard it would get so fast. Actually one Sister said she was just expecting the MTC to be like EFY. No Sister, not even close. We are constantly learning and in the same classroom for 10 hours each day, except Sundays.
Anyway, in our district we are basically all the rejects who didn't get their visas yet. There are 4 of us sisters and 4 elders, except Elder Gibby and Elder Marsh got their visas this week so they leave next Tuesday. So maybe there's hope for all of us.

The hardest thing so far (other than being with a companion for 24/7) has been teaching. We started teaching only the 3rd day here, but we're only allowed to teach in all Portuguese. Here's how a few of the lessons went:

Lesson 1: When the investigator opened the door, we stood there for 10 seconds because we forgot how to invite ourselves in

Lesson 2: Had a lesson prepared but then changed it during the lesson to fit the investigator's needs, but we didn't prepare for that and didn't know how to say stuff so we mostly read from our help guide. Just use your imagination. It was rough.

Lesson 3: Lesson prepared on the Restoration. A little struggle with the language as usual  (Again, only our 6th day), but the Spirit was strong. Best lesson we've had. Not necessarily good, just better.

My companion and I are terrible at planning. We are getting a lot better, though. Practice makes perfect, and trust me we get lots of practice.

I guess I should end with something I've learned this week. I've learned a lot about faith and a lot about the Holy Ghost. I've noticed that during our lessons whenever I bear my testimony and the Holy Ghost is present, I am able to bear my testimony in Portuguese with ease. The words come to my mind and this just shows me how important the Holy Ghost is in this work.

And also that in order to to receive gifts of the Spirit, you must be prepared to receive them.

Also, if you haven't already, you should listen to/read Elder Bednar's talk "The Character of Christ" (something like that).

Here's my address while I'm here at the MTC for the next 5 weeks unless I get my visa before then:

Week 1~First Letter

Dear Family,

Made it to the MTC safe.
I can't take it here.  It's awful and I want to come home... Just kidding, it's actually not as stressful as I thought it was going to be.  We are teaching a lesson tomorrow all in Portuguese and it is only our third day and that's the most stressful thing that is happening.  My companions/roommates are great! They all have strong testimonies and love the gospel.  Our district is awesome too.  We have a large one apparently consisting of four girls and four guys.  Also our branch president, counselors and wives are so awesome.  I think I lucked out.  So, that's about it.

Love, Jessica

Day 1~Entering MTC

In Provo...one last trip to "In and Out" hee, hee:)
This is it!
